Keeper loan available as Phil weighs up options

-

Sunderland have long-been credited with an interest in Matija Sarkic and he is available for a loan deal despite signing for Wolves.

The 23-year-old left Aston Villa in the summer before joining Premier League rivals Wolves on a three-year deal.

It has been confirmed, however, that they will look to send him out on loan next season to further enhance his development.

A host of clubs, including Sunderland, have been linked with the goalkeeper.

Wolves chairman, Jeff Shi, said: “We are very happy to welcome Matija, who is a promising young goalkeeper with lots of potential. We hope that he will be a success at Wolves and with his loan club next season.”

The Black Cats are looking to bring in another senior goalkeeper following the departure of Jon McLaughlin to Rangers, Sunderland currently have Lee Burge and promising youngster Anthony Patterson – who is expected to go out on loan.

Burge looks to be in pole position to be the club’s number one next season, as the squad makes a return to training.

The former Coventry City stopper is experienced at League One level and made a positive impression during 11 appearances across all competitions last season.

Speaking earlier this summer, Parkinson said: “From our point of view, we knew that there was always a chance that Jon would leave this summer so we had already started thinking about possible targets just in case.

“We need to bring in another senior goalkeeper as cover and competition for Lee Burge and we will press on with that.”
