Community support is just out of this world

-

A community group that brings elderly residents together in Sunderland has received a timely boost – thanks to the initiative of a city centre officer.

Towers Community Group supports residents of the city’s Planet, Astral and Solar tower blocks by providing an informal and relaxed environment for people to catch up and help those living alone to avoid feeling isolated.

Now the group has been awarded £1,000 from regional builder Persimmon Homes Durham’s Community Champions scheme. The money will help fund further sessions, equipment to make residents feel safer – as well as a special trip out when the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

PCSO Kirstie Cooke, part of the city centre neighbourhood policing team, nominated the group as potential worthy recipients for the funding – and handed over the cheque on behalf of the builder earlier this week.

“There are many groups who play a crucial role in the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, and Towers Community Group is certainly one of them,” PCSO Cooke said.

“I’m delighted they have received this donation which will continue to offer residents an opportunity to meet, socialise and stay safe.”

Persimmon Homes Durham launched Community Champions in 2015 with a view to helping community groups, charities and good causes across County Durham, Wearside and South Tyneside.

Richard Cook, director in charge of Persimmon Homes Durham, said: “We’re fortunate to be able to support our communities and give back in the areas in which we are building.

“We would urge any group working with older people to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try and become our next Community Champion.”
