THIS WEEK’S CHOICE

Playfully inspired by Anaïs Nin’s infamous collection of erotic short stories, Little Birds weaves tales of love and desire together with personal drama and political intrigue.

This Sky original stars Juno Temple as troubled American debutante Lucy Savage alongside Yumna Marwan and Hugh Skinner.

In the opening episode, it’s 1955 and Lucy, the daughter of an arms manufacturer, arrives in Tangier where her husband-tobe, Lord Hugo Canvenish Smythe (Skinner), is waiting for her. However, after a disappointing reception, Lucy discovers Cherifa (Marwan), one of Tangier’s most scandalous characters, who captures her imagination and introduces her to the Interzone’s world of personal secrets, sexual possibilities and political strife.

“What an extraorinary role. At this point in my life and my career, I feel like I’m somewhat in between: I’m not in my early 20s but I don’t really play in my 30s yet. So I get excited when there’s a role that fills that space of kind of late 20s; that has a real journey, a real beginning, middle, and an end and a real micro life that you can sink your teeth into. What’s so extraordinary about Little Birds is it’s not just a great role for me: there are so many great female roles; there’s also so many great male roles. And each character has so many layers upon layers upon layers. People are really onions, for lack of a better expression.”

Yup, all episodes are available from Tuesday.
