Ex-Black Cat Hu-goal is off to a flyer at Old Trafford

-

Sunderland academy graduate Joe Hugill swapped the Academy of Light for Old Trafford this summer – and has made a quick impression at Manchester United.

The 16-year-old shot to prominence last season courtesy of a run in the Black Cats’ under-23 side, with some impressive performances – including a brace against West Ham United – putting him on the radar of a number of clubs.

And it was Manchester United who won the race for the striker, agreeing sixfigure deals for Hugill and teammate Logan Pye over the summer months.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Hugill posted on Instagram: “Over the moon to have finally signed for the biggest club in the world Manchester United.

"Proudest moment in my career so far!

"I can’t wait to get down and started, would also like to thank everyone at Sunderland, especially the coaches and players who have helped me along the way and for so many memorable moments on and off the pitch and for all the achievements over the years.

"Looking forward to the challenge ahead and the season starting.”

And the striker has already made an impact.

The teenager was handed a start in the Red Devils’ under-18 friendly with Preston North End, and netted the first goal in a 5-0 win – controlling a dinked pass into the box before lofting an effort over the goalkeeper.

It remains unclear whether fellow Academy of Light graduate Pye was involved in the game, but both are expected to form part of United’s under-18 squad this term.
