Sunderland have added former Hartlepool United defender Kenton Richardson to their U23 group.

Richardson was available on a free transfer after his contract with the National League side expired.

The full-back made over 50 senior appearances in all competitions for Pools, but has now signed a two-year deal on Wearside.

The 21-year-old was one of the Black Cats’ main academy targets this summer as they look to rebuild a side that failed to win a league game last season.

The group has been further weakened by the departures of Bali Mumba and, as it stands, Benji Kimpioka.

W i th h ead o f re c r u i tment Ged McNamee back from furlough leave, the club have begun their summer recruitment and recently announced the arrivals of Sam Wilding, Vinnie Steels and Bobby Beaumont.

The club are taking a look at a number of trialists, having faced Northern League side Consett earlier this week and with more games on the horizon.

One player whose arrival does not look likely, however, is Richardson’s former Hartlepool team-mate Josh Hawkes.

Hawkes was on Sunderland’s radar but the forward is not expected to join the Black Cats, with Pools entitled to compensation from his next club after offering improved

terms to extend his stay.

The weakness of the U18 and U23 group has been a major source of discontent amongst supporters with the Madrox regime, and non-executive director David Jones said last week it was something the club were working to try and address.

Sunderland U23 boss Elliott Dickman, meanwhile, has urged Richardson to push for a first-team spot.

Dickman said: “We’re very pleased with the signing of Kenton.

"He has a lot of experience at National League level, despite his young age, so that’s going to add something to our group and really help the younger players.

"His attitude is very good and it’s down to him now to progress to the first team.”

Richardson himself exp re s s e d h i s d e l i g ht at th e news: “I’m delighted to sign for the club.

“It’s extra special for me because I used to have a season ticket here with my dad. I can’t wait to get going now and push on this season.”
