Hedgehogs killed in horrific park attack

-

Four hedgehogs have been killed in a horrific attack where they were cut open and mutilated, RSPCA inspectors say.

The RSPCA has launched an investigation after a member of the public discovered the four dead hedgehogs piled on top of each other in a park off Church Lane, in Murton.

Pictures, which are too graphic to publish, show the hedgehogs had been cut from the throat to down their torso.

Inspectors believe a person has carried out the sick attack earlier on Friday, while the hedgehogs were searching for food.

Inspector Rowena Proctor said: “These poor hedgehogs had each been cut from the throat down the length of their torso, and were piled on top of each other in the park.

"This would suggest this had been done by a person, rather than predation by another animal.

"It was clear that the incident could have only happened shortly before it was reported to us as the bodies were still fresh, so it’s likely it happened early that morning when the hedgehogs were out looking for food. “One of the hedgehog’s heads had been bent backwards and the other had their leg removed which was also found nearby.

"Each of the hedgehogs had been cut in such a way that their insides were spilling out across the grass which was extremely distressing to see.”

She added: "This incident appears to be a cruel and callous attack on these defenceless animals which is very concerning.”

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area is urged to call the appeal line on 0300 123 8018.
