Building on a new seaside community has begun with ground being broken on a Seaburn housing development.

Construction company Avant Homes, which has offices in Sunderland, havs started work on 82 new homes at Lowry Park, a 8.19-acre site a short distance from the seafront and Morrisons supermarket.

The first home is expected to be available for sale later this year, while all of the properties are scheduled for completion by 2023. Ten percent of these will be affordable.

Sunderland City Council announced the scheme in July 2020. The development will deliver two, three and four-bedroom houses, using 15 different designs.

The development stands behind two new leisure developments, STACK Seaburn which opened last week and the Seaburn Inn, a new £6million hotel which is set to open in 2021.

Avant will also invest more than £600,000 in local education, a coastal warden contribution, the provision of open green spaces and a children’s play area.

The development will create about 90 sales and construction jobs over the course of its three-year construction.

Jennifer Tupman, Avant Homes North East regional director, said: “Lowry Park will be an impressive development and as a Sunderland-based business we are very pleased to be playing a role in the wider

regeneration of this part of the city. This landmark development will be a significant con

tribution to Sunderland City Council’s plans for this desirable seaside suburb alongside

the leisure offer currently in development.

"We ’ r e p l e a s e d t o g e t groundworks underway and take the next step in bringing our very latest range of homes to buyers in the area.”

Councillor Rebecca Atkinson, cabinet member for Dynamic City at Sunderland City Council, added: “It’s fantastic to see Avant get started on building a stunning new neighbourhood, that will add to Sunderland’s housing offer, creating an attractive new community close to our seaside.

“Plans for Seaburn have quickly moved ahead over the last few months and I’m glad to see this, the latest in a line of significant improvements to the seaside, move forward.

“It’s part of a wider vision for a vibrant mixed-use community at Seaburn, that will ensure more people choose it as a place to live and play.”
