Parkinson insists it is the ‘right time’ for McGeady to move on

Aiden McGeady wants another chance at Sunderland but boss Phil Parkinson insists the time is right for him to move on.

McGeady was taken out of the first-team set-up by Parkinson in December of last year, with the Black Cats boss saying it was not due to any specific single incident, merely that it was the best thing for the team moving forward.

The winger subsequently went on loan to Charlton Athletic.

The 34-year-old had been training with the U23s after his return but is currently sidelined with a calf strain.

Earlier this week McGeady said he wanted another chance on Wearside but Parkinson has stood firm.

Asked about McGeady’s future ahead of the season opener against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, Parkinson said: "We would like Aiden to move on. The time is right.

"We have young players in the squad we want to give the opportunity to, players move on and younger players emerge.

"Aiden is injured at the moment anyway. Hopefully we can reach an agreement where he can find a club to go and play for that he is happy with."

Parkinson has previously said he does not want to block the pathway for Dan Neil and Elliot Embleton.

"I’ve got another year on my contract,” McGeady told

the Go Radio Football Show this week.

“Currently I am in the bomb squad, I think we have all been there before.

"I’m training at 2 o’clock every day.

“It’s a hard one for me because I have came back from being on loan and there is talk of the club being taken over and a lot of different things.

“I’m just kind of sitting here thinking I want another chance.”

*Former Sunderland striker Mikael Mandron is in line to make his League One debut as Crewe host Charlton tomorrow.

The 25- year-old made the switch from Gillingam in the summer, and struck twice in Tuesday’s 3-2 EFL Trophy win at Bolton. Owen Dale could continue up front having also found the net in the Bolton win.

Manchester United loanee Dylan Levitt could make his debut, with the 19-yearold midfielder having made the switch to the Addicks earlier this week.
