Man who repeatedly flouted drive ban is jailed

A motor menace who was caught flouting his driving ban three times in less than a week has been jailed.

Kevin Matthew Sayers is beginning 26 weeks in prison after he was criticised by a court for the “persistent nature” of his driving offences.

South Tyneside Magistrate­s’ Court also condemned the “the lack of regard shown by the defendant for the safety of other road users” after his latest crime sheet included dangerous driving and failing to stop for a police officer.

Saye r s , 3 4 , o f Fra n k l i n Street, Millfield, Sunderland, has pleaded guilty to committing eight offences between February 22 and February 28 this year.

He admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop for a police officer, driving while disqualifi­ed and without insurance following an incident in Silksworth Lane, Sunderland, on February 22.

Sayers also pleaded guilty to separate counts of flouting his driving ban and drivi n g w i th out i n su ra n c e i n Forth Street, South Shields, on February 27 and again in

Newcastle Road, Sunderland, the following day.

In addition, he admitted driving while disqualifi­ed and without insurance in Manet Gardens, South, Shields, on October 29 last year and in Hampstead Road, Sunderland on May 24 this year.

The court said the offences were “aggravated by the previous record of offending”.

Sayers was also banned from the road for 39 months and ordered to take an exte nded driving test at the end of this period before his licence can be returned.

The court additional­ly instructed him to pay a £128 victim surcharge and £85 prosecutio­n costs at a rate of £5 per week from December 16.
