Sunderland RCA manager Martin Swales is hoping to hit the road as his side await today’s FA Cup first qualifying round draw.

RCA will take their place in the first qualifying round for the third time in the last four seasons after a hard-earned win at Thornaby.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, it was Swales’ men that took control of the tie and they secured a 2-0 win thanks to goals from summer signings Callum Hope and James Fairley.

A h ead o f to d ay ’s d raw, Swales told the Echo: “We had nine players missing, but the young lads stuck in and got us through.

“If I am being honest, most teams probably want a home draw, but we want an away draw.

“That means we could get away on the bus, have a bit of team bonding and enjoy a day out.

“T h e f i n a n c e f ro m l a s t year to this year isn’t as much, but it’s still big for us.

“You still want a winnable tie and try and get through and get some money in the bank.”

*Seaham Red Star manager Mark Collingwood has admitted that he will look to add to his squad in the wake of his side’s home defeat against North Shields.

Collingwood’s side fell to their first league defeat of the season as former Red Star striker Dan Wilson came back to haunt his old club.

The powerful frontman hit a prolific hat-trick to put the Robins on their way to a 3-1 win at the Ferguson Motor Repairs Stadium.

He told The Echo: “We aren’t really creating anything, so I will hopefully try and get a couple of wingers in over the next week.

“Maybe it was a mistake to start the season without them, that’s something I will have to look at.

“May have to change our system a little bit, try and create more chances, we will see what we can do.

“I h ave t w o p l aye r s i n mind, hopefully we can get the deals done and get the paperwork signed and then we will take it from there.”

Elsewhere in Division One on Saturday, Ben Reay’s equaliser earned Newton Aycliffe a 1-1 draw against local rivals Shildon after David Palmer had put the Railwaymen ahead at Moore Lane.

And it was Consett that secured their place in Monday’s draw after they held their nerve to claim a 5-4 win in the shoot-out.
