City looking to Dias to fill Kompany position

-

Manchester City have agreed a deal to sign Portugal defender Ruben Dias from Benfica for £65m.

City's Argentina centreback Nicolas Otamendi, 32, will go the other way for about £13.7 min a separate transfer.

Manager Pep Guardiola has wanted a right-sided central defender since Vincent Kompany retired last summer.

Dias, 23, was captain for Ben fi ca' s win over Moreirense on Saturday and hugged team-mates and sporting director Rui Costa at the final whistle.

After the match, Dias - who had scored his 12th goal for the club in 133 appearances - told Benfica TV: "It was a very important game for me and being able to mark it with a goal was very special."

The failure to secure a replacement for former skipper Kompany was seen as a major reason for City not putting up more of a challenge to Liverpool in last season's Premier League title race.

Meanwhile, Rodri insists City will learn and improve after Sunday’s chastening defeat to Leicester.

City surrendered a lead to crash 5-2 at the hands of the Jamie Vardy-inspired Foxes, who powered to the top of the Premier League with three wins from three as a result.

The 24-year-old said: “I think we did a good performance for the first 25-30 minutes, but it is a difficult game to read what happened.

“We conceded, we made mistakes – but they didn’t propose anything. For very small and tiny details we lost and we (could have) drawn the game.

“We have to improve and learn what we do but we are in the beginning of the season.”
