Rogerson fires Houghton Cricket Club to home win
In the Sunderland & District Over-40s League fourth division, hosts Houghton Cricket Club took an early lead.
After Willow Pond goalkeeper John Davis parried a vicious Alan Jones shot out for a corner,.Hugh Daglish scored from close-range under pressure from the visiting team’s defence.
Chances were creat e d f ro m e i t h e r s i d e i n th e f i r s t h a l f but nothing came to fruition. At the start of the second half a Cricket Club shot by Steve Belshaw had Davis save at full stretch.
Willow had lots of possession and eventually it paid off when winger Anthony Lock won a corner on the left and midfielder Gary Barker whipped the ball in for Brian Adamson to head home the equaliser past Michael Potter.
The game looked to be heading for a draw when a foul on the edge of the 18-yard box gave Houghton a freekick by Darren Cartner.
Chris Rogerson pulled down Cartner's free-kick in the box to fire home as the home side took the lead with minutes on the clock.
T h e g a m e c o u l d h ave been put out of sight from a Houghton counter-attack but Jones blazed over with the goal at his mercy.
The win lifts Houghton CC up to eighth place in the
league standings, while Willow Pond are in 11th spot
Hartlepool Catholic Club won 3-2 at home to the Division Two leaders Seah a m H a rb o u r, t h e h o s t s putting in a great perform a n c e t o t a k e aw ay t h e visitors’ unbeaten record. Supporting lone striker Scotty Newbegin set up all three goals for Paul Lindsay, Marv
Walker and Dave Barkley.
Despite conceding two late goals this was a wonderful team effort by Catholic, but with a hat-trick of assists Newbegin was definitely the star man.
Hartlepool Stag & Monkey beat Washington Biddick 2-1.
Biddick scored just after half-time from a great counter attacking move, but Stag continued to press and were rewarded on the hour mark when Aiden Trimble headed home from Brendan Deer’s corner.
Stag snatched the points with the last kick of the game, Deer racing on to a defences p l i tt i n g p a s s f ro m N e i l Rafferty.
Alan Keers netted as Raby Arms lost 3-1 to Sedgefield.
