Jennifer Wisbeck has described her shock after the driver of a car hit her young son in Sunderland and then drove off.

The incident took place at around 7pm on Saturday, when 10- year-old Shane Wisbeck-Smith was hit by a driver who didn’t stop while he was riding his bike on Hylton Road.

Shane’s mum Jen Wisbeck said that he was “very lucky” not to have been seriously injured.

The 27-year-old said: “I was in Herons, I was at the till and I just heard a loud bang followed by a scream and I instantly knew that something had happened to Shane.

"I ran out the shop panicking to see him lying on the floor with his bike in the middle of the road.

"I just tried to keep it together for him.

"Thankfully, he has been very lucky and only has minor tissue damage but it has affected his confidence and he is now frightened to go outside.”

The driver of the white car did not stop at the scene which Jen said was ‘shocking’.

She said :“I just can’ t rest, it is constantly going through my head.

"The bang was that loud that the driver would have known that they had hit something.

"You wouldn’t leave a dog in the middle of the road after hitting it, never mind a child.

"I just hope that the driver is caught.”

Northumbria Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident and are appealing for people with information to come forward.
