Committed to protecting our community

- By Sarah Pitt Chief Supt, Southern Area Command

It’s been another challenging few weeks for everyone as we continue to all play a role in helping to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

From a policing perspective, when it has been proportionate to do so, we have responded to reports of suspected breaches of the legislation.

We are working closely with our communities and offering advice to people who have mistakenly broken the restrictions.

But as we have made clear, where individuals have chosen to ignore the measures in place, we are committed to taking enforcement action to protect our communities.

Our dedicated teams are also supporting local authority partners around their engagement and enforcement activity with businesses.

I’d like to thank the overwhelming majority of people who continue to follow the rules and display that positive spirit that the North East is famed for.

Away from Covid-19, over the last few weeks, we have seen some of our most notorious criminals put behind bars, a series of excellent convictions at court, while our policing teams continue to proactively respond to incidents across the region.

There’s also been some fantastic problem-solving and partnership work, as highlighted with the SARA Project which is now in full swing in Southwick.

We are working handin-hand not only with our partners but the entire community to help improve the area and support families living there.

You can read more about the SARA Project above, and that’s just a snapshot of the outstanding work ongoing across our region.

We will continue to aim to provide the very best policing service that you all expect and deserve.

Take care and stay safe.
