Red Star make good progress in the FA Vase

-

Tom Lawson and Taylor Richardson scored either side of half-time as Seaham Red Star secured their place in the second round for the first time since 2015, writes Mark Carruthers.

The result came as a welcome relief for boss Mark Collingwood after his side su f f e re d f ive c o n s e c ut ive league defeats to slip to second from bottom in the Division One table.

Ryhope CW joint-manager Gary Pearson has set his sights on making club history after his side came through their all-Northern League tie against Division One rivals Penrith.

Bailey Judson scored twice and Brad Hird was also on target as their side eased to a 3-0 home win against the Cumbrians to put themselves into the hat for Monday’s draw.

Ryhope have been into the second round on four occasions without have failed to go further – and Pearson is determined to change that statistic over the coming weeks.

He said: “It’s superb, and there’s nothing better than being in the hat at the end of the day.

“For the club, it’s nice to get into second round and we haven’t been into the third round.

“For us, it’s always been a target, so a nice favourable draw would be good.”

Elsewhere on Saturday, Jarrow sprung a major surprise as they sent North East Counties League Premier Division leaders Yorkshire Amateur out of the competition.

The two sides failed to break the deadlock over the 90 minutes at Perth Green.

Jarrow goalkeeper Steve Hubery then produced two stunning saves to help his side secure a 3-0 win in a penalty shoot-out.
