Cathedral's 'prayer and reflection' offer

Durham Cathedral has announced that it is to stay open for private prayer and quiet reflection during second national lockdown.

Daily worship will be taking place online through its Facebook page. The cathedral will be open for today to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, and Sundays, from 11am to 3pm.

As was the case during the first national lockdown, members of the public will have the opportunit­y to light candles for loved ones during their visit if they wish and The Shrine of St Cuthbert will remain open as a place for private prayer and reflection.

There will be no public worship inside the cathedral and the Undercroft Restaurant, cathedral shop, cloister and toilets will close until December 2.

Du rh a m C ath e d ra l i s joining in with a national call to prayer at 6pm each evening by tolling a single bell for one minute during the lockdown.

The Very Reverend And rew Tre m l ett , D ea n o f Durham said: “While news of a second lockdown is unsettling for many, we are pleased that Durham Cathedral will remain open for private prayer and qu i e t r e f l e c t i o n during these challengin­g times.

"We a re p a s - sionate about being able to provide a safe and peaceful space for members of our community.”

Social distancing is in operation with pews widely separated, there is a one way system in operation – entry via the Galilee Chapel and exit via the North Door - hand sanitiser is available and face coverings must be worn – except for children under 11 and people unable to wear them for specific reasons.
