Supermarket giant hunts for new store sites
Supermarket chain Aldi has revealed it is searching for locations across Sunderland and South Shields to build new stores.
Aldi have released a list of “required locations” highlighting where they want to build new stores across the North East and Yorkshire.
Included among the 32 locations are Grangetown/
Ryhope, Houghton, Boldon, South Shields East and South Shields South.
A brief statement accompanying the list says: “We have an ambitious property investment and development programme across the North East England, North Yorkshire and Cumbria and we need your help to find new commercial sites.”
Currently, Sunderland have five Aldi supermarkets in Pennywell, Millfield, Southwick, Hall Farm and the Hylton Riverside Park, although the latter is set to close during the first half of 2021, with staff relocating to other stores.
Opening stores in both Grangetown/Ryhope and Houghton would leave Wearsiders
with plenty of choice on what branch they wish to shop at.
The Pennywell store opened on this summer on June 11, with bosses saying the store on Chester Road was part of its “investment in local communities across the UK”.
At the time of opening, manager Rikki Elliott said: “We’re really looking forward to opening the new Aldi store here in Pennywell which will allow the local community to access the everyday essentials they need during this challenging time.”
For residents living in South Shields, the news may be welcomed as the town currently has only one Aldi supermarket on Chichester Road.
