Great Britain claim two more medals at European Championships

-

Great Britain won two more medals on the final day of competition at the European Track Cycling Championships in Plovdiv.

Ethan Vernon won the silver medal in the men’s Kilo behind Czech Tomas Babek, while Laura Kenny and Elinor Barker combined to take bronze in the women’s Madison.

Their successes meant Great Britain topped the overall medals table with six golds, three silvers and two bronzes at the end of the event.

Vernon qualified for his final in sixth place but produced a personal best time of 1:00.999 to finish behind Babek.

Vernon, who finished fifth in the points race on Saturday, said: “You always come into a race to win but to do a PB by five tenths of a second and go under 1:01 – I can’t really ask for much more.

“Especially after the other night where I was racing a 160 lap points race which was a mega tough race, so to only have a bit of recovery and then go and do that, I’m happy to get a PB and the silver medal.”

Kenny and Barker had to be content with bronze after a gruelling Madison competition which was won by Italy on 52 points, with Russia just one point behind and the British pair on 38.
