The promising update as Cats wait for key supporter return date

-

Supporters could be back in football grounds by next m o nth – ac c o rd i n g to re - ports.

The Daily Mail claim that the Department of Culture, Media and Sport have submitted plans to the Cabinet Office that could see fans back in stadia once the country comes out of lockdown on December 2.

Capacities would still be restricted, andfanswouldhaveto socially distance within stadiums under the supposed proposals.

And a crucial caveat to the plans is that the return of fans would be dependent upon the coronavirus infection rates in the local area – meaning those clubs based in areas with a high ‘R’ number would not be able to welcome back supporters.

Fans have not been allowed in stadia since late September, when pilot events to trial the safe return of spectators were paused. But this promising update could signal that a phased return may begin shortly – with clubs desperately waiting for news of when fans can return, having been deprived of vital income for a number of months.

Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Dowden and officials from sporting bodies met earlier today to discuss that loss of income and how and when supporters can return, among other topics.

Posting on Twitter after the meeting, Dowden said: “Constructive conversation with football leaders on governance & £, diversity & getting fans back.

"I want to work together with football to make progress on important issues for the game's long-term future.

“Discussions to continue as we start our fan-led review of governance."

“As a result, the FIFA Club World Cup 2020 will now be held from February 1 to 11, 2021, taking place in Qatar as per the original host appointment by the FIFA Council in June 2019.”
