Ex-Black Cat Halford says he will play for nothing

Former Sunderland defender Greg Halford has offered to play for FREE – in a bid to relaunch his career.

The 35-year-old has been without a club since leaving Ab e rd e e n i n th e su m m e r of 2019 and, despite having s p e nt p re - s ea s o n w i th a n u n n a m e d s i d e, re m a i n s a free agent.

And he has now taken to Linkedin to offer his services to clubs, and insists he is willing to play without pay until January in a bid to return to the game.

But he managed just nine appearance­s at the Stadium of Light before joining Wolverhamp­ton Wanderers in 2009.

And while he struggled fo r ga m e t i m e at Su n d e r - land, Halford has gone on to rack up more than 500 career appearance­s for clubs such as Portsmouth, Rotherham United, Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest.

Now, he’s hoping to build o n t h at t a l l y b y j o i n i n g a new club – even if it means playing for free in the shortterm.

"I ' ve h ad a p re - s ea s o n with a club and trained every day since and (am) still training now so I'm fit and ready to go into a team.

"My hunger is as strong as ever and (I am) willing to do anything to get my career up and running again.”
