D e rby C ou nty a re e ye i n g an audacious loan move for Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff – according to reports.

The Sunday Mirror claim that the Rams – who have recently appointed former Newcastle boss Steve McClaren as their Technical Director – are eyeing a loan deal for the 20-year-old.

Longstaff penned a new two-year deal at St James’s Park inthesummerbuthasfeatured just once for the club this term – featuring in the 2-0 defeat to Southampton at the start of the month.

And the Mirror are now reporting that McClaren is keen to use his ‘connections’ on Tyneside to wrap-up a halfseason loan move for the midfielder.

Newcastle could look to move on a number of players in the January transfer window, with Rolando Aarons, Christian Atsu, Achraf Lazaar and Henri Saivet among those who are likely to be allowed to leave if a suitable offer comes in.

Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson praised Karl Darlow after Newcastle United beat his Crystal Palace team.

H oweve r, H o d g s o n ac - knowledged that the visitors’ 2-0 win at Selhurst Park wasn’t just down to the goalkeeper, who made important saves in each half.

Newcastle showed a doggedness and determination over the 90 minutes which had been lacking in the club’s two previous games, and Ste

ve Bruce’s side won the Premier League game thanks to the link-up play of goalscorers Callum Wilson and Joelinton late in the game.

"All defeats hurt, and this one did – as we didn't play well,”

said Hodgson, Palace’s manager. “I didn't think we were going to lose. I didn't think we would win it either. So to lose it is a bitter blow. Congratulations to Newcastle on winning it.

"I would credit the whole

Newcastle team. The keeper played his part, but I think it’s too simplistic to say we didn't win because of their goalkeeper. We didn't create enough."

Newcastle have seen two further players test positive for COVID-19 – according to reports.

The Telegraph claim that two further members of the first-team squad have now tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total at the club to five. And the report says that the Magpies are now ‘waiting nervously’ to discover whether there are any more infections in the squad ahead of the Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Friday evening.
