Taylor offers injury update on Black Cats pair

-

Sunderland fear that Luke O’Nien may have suffered a dislocated shoulder in the closing stages of the 1-1 draw with Burton Albion.

The Black Cats also have an injury concern over Charlie Wyke, who was replaced in the first half as he struggled with a knee injury.

Caretaker boss Andrew Taylor says the pair will have to be assessed on Wednesday, but they are clearly both doubts for the visit of Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

“I don't know for definite but I think it might be quite a serious one with Luke,” Taylor said.

“He looked in a lot of pain. “It looked like a dislocated shoulder to me but I've not heard from the physio.

“Charlie is not sure about his.

"It has swollen very quickly, he's not sure if he's twisted it or if he's just got a bang.

“We'll have to assess him on Wednesday and see where he is.”

Whoever is in charge for Saturday’s game could, however, be able to call upon Jordan Willis and Lynden Gooch, with Taylor revealing before this game that both were making good progress in their recoveries.

"Lynden and Jordan are both still out, but they aren’t too far off returning,” he said.

“Jordan was out doing a lot of running today, so hopefully he will be available for selection in the next week or so."

The 1-1 draw left Sunderland outside the play-off positions, though both Fleetwood Town and Portsmouth fell to surprise defeats against Northampton Town and Blackpool respectively.

The Black Cats are five points off second, but no longer have the advantage of a game in hand.
