Shining a light on Sunderland’s vision

-

Visions of a vibrant Sunderland future are shining bright, in more ways than one. As we reveal today, plans for the new high level pedestrian bridge are set to get the go ahead.

But this multi-million pound ‘smart street bridge’ is going to be more than a glorified walkway as it lights the way forward for the city. Plans include virtual displays that can be seen on people’s smartphones as well as the incorporation of creative lighting to illuminate the green spaces on either side of the bridge. This ‘shard of light’ will shine like a beacon in the city, providing a visual treat for the public.

Councillor Graeme Miller, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “We’re determined to create a bridge that brings to life the ambition of the city, so integrating light, smart technology and excellent design will make this a really experience-led crossing, that will deliver a visual treat for people using it. The city was named Smart City 2020, so it is apt that we integrate this into our developments to enrich our spaces and create a place that is futurefocused and dynamic. That is exactly what this bridge will be.”

Those who remember the ill-fated Ambit floating sculpture on the Wear will have their misgivings given the failure of that illuminated design, but this is a far more impressive and well thought-out project.

And you can’t help but get inspired by the enthusiasm with which the council is embracing the whole Riverside Sunderland scheme.

Given the gloom of Covid, these ambitious plans provide a welcome light.
