Assistant boss hoping for a Washington United cup run this season

-

Washington United assistant manager Kallum Warne is hoping for a good cup run this season – starting with Saturday’s Durham Trophy tie against Darlington RA.

The Wearside League newboys have enjoyed a mixed start tolife inDivisionOne,but make their first moves in a cup competition at Nissan Sports Club this weekend.

Warne and manager Cameron Thompson oversaw their first training session since lockdown came to an end on Thursday night, and the former believes that the United squad are fully prepared to face their Wearside League rivals.

He said: “The lads are buzzing to have football back under way and we cannot wait to get going once again.

“We managed to get a training session in on Thursday, so know we will be ready for the task ahead and we are confident we can get into the next round of the Trophy.

“We always look for ways to win every game and cup games are no different.

“Not having training and games during lockdown was obviously tough, but it gave us as coaches a chance to look at ways to improve the squad and the players we have, as well as looking at the development of the club’s younger sides.”

There will be two absentees from the United squad as Michael Young (suspended) and Will Cook (work commitments) both miss out.

Silksworth CW get their Trophy campaign under way with a visit to Darlington Town.

Manager Jamie Cole has confirmed that he will be without Harry Munday, Harry Graham and Liam Mulvain for the trip to Eastbourne Sports Complex.

Defender Sam Attewell will be the only absentee from the Boldon CA squad as they prepare to entertain Northern Alliance club Winlaton Vulcans, and suspended trio Robbie Houghton, Liam McVicar and Joe Riley will all miss Gateshead Leam Rangers visit to Farringdon Detached.

New signing Luke Allison could make his debut for Annfield Plain when they host Coxhoe Athletic, and Horden CW are without suspended goalkeeper Paul Griffith for their home tie against Northern Alliance club Gateshead Rutherford.

There is one other all-Wearside League tie as Wolviston make the short trip to Norton and Stockton Ancients.

Chester-le-Street United could move into second place in the Wearside League with a win at lowly West Auckland Tunns, while Windscale entertain Richmond Town.
