Firefighters pelted with eggs on call-out

-

A fire service appliance was pelted with eggs as its crew tackled a blaze.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has shared this photo of one of its appliances in the wake of the attack, which happened as one of its crews from its Rainton Bridge fire station were dealing with a bin shed fire at Hetton Wellness Centre.

The side of the truck was left splattered with eggs following the incident, sparking a call from service bosses for troublemakers to think again about their bad behaviour.

A spokesperson said: “It might seem like a bit of harmless fun but this kind of behaviour can be really dangerous and could cause an accident.

"Don't egg emergency service vehicles.”

They added the hashtag #ShowSomeRespect as they posted their message via social media.

The weekend saw Northumbria Police enforce a 48-hour dispersal notice across Hetton and Hougton following reports of antisocial behaviour in the neighbouring towns.

Officers patrol led at trouble hotspots and asked residents and business to get in touch to report disorder, with the action following on from another order imposed the weekend before, which resulted in a “significant reduction” in the number of incidents in the area.

The attack on the fire service’s vehicle happened during a call out on the night of Wednesday, December 2.

Anyone with information about the incident can pass on information to Northumbria Police via the Tell Us Something page of its website or by calling 101.
