The former Sunderland attacker recently joined North East rivals Middlesbrough on a short-term deal until January, and scored twice as Boro won againstSwanseaCitylastweek.

The 26-year-old was previously a free agent after he was released by Sunderland in the summer, and was close to signing for Indian Super League club East Bengal before learning about Neil Warnock’s interest.

Watmore spent six injuryhit seasons on Wearside between 2013 and 2019 before departing the club.

The 12-time England under-21 youth international still holds the area in high regard after he and his father donated £500 to the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen Fundraiser’s GoFundMe page.

I a n Wa t m o r e , a f o r - mer FA chief executive, explained their decision to donate.

He said: "This is a brilliant initiative. Duncan visited last year and was very impressed by everyone as well as deeply affected by the scale of the challenge.

"I cannot imagine COVID has made it anything but much harder.”

The appeal, set up by Roker Report, is raising funds for Wearsiders struggling at Christmas time, and has already raised over £1500.

“This Christmas, we are a s k i n g th e R o ke r R e p o rt community to raise funds for Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen,” the fansite explained. “You can be certain that your donation, no matter how large or small, will be put to good use to provide help for local people who are in need of it.”
