Hub drives new idea for Covid support

A community hub which has been supporting people in need during the coronavirus pandemic is appealing for support to help fund a van so it can better reach those in need.

Mickey’s Place, which operates as a food bank and community cafe in Washington, has been giving away 70 meals a day and working as a takeaway during lockdown.

Now volunteers are hoping to raise £1,000 for a Mickey’s Place van to make deliveries and collections more efficient.

Volunteer Ruth Bell said the van would make a huge difference to the community

hub and mean they can better support those who need their help, while also helping reduce the team’s carbon footprint.

She said: “It has been busier than ever during this second lockdown with a lot of people remaining furloughed.

"We’re still continuing to give out about 70 meals a day and a van would really help us better support the community and reduce our carbon footprint too.”

Mickey’s Place, based at St Michael's Church in Sulgrave, opened at the beginning of May 2020 after organisers saw how many people were struggling during the coronavirus lockdown.

Since then, a group of volunteers have been feeding vulnerable residents and offering support to people struggling in the community.

During the height of the first national lockdown, volunteers were feeding over 150 people a day as it supported the community through the first wave of the pandemic.
