Community’s festive magic
A school community has been praised for joining together to create a winter wonderland to cheer pupils up at the end of a difficult year.
Staff and families of pupils at Fatfield Academy, in South croft, Washington, were supported by Sunder land energy saving firm Arktek to “bring the magic of Christmas” to the primary school.
They acted after realising that the ongoing coronavirus restrictions meant that celebrations were likely to be different for youngsters this year.
Headteacher Tracey Pizl praised their efforts, saying: “After such a difficult year, we wanted to bring the magic of Christmas to school for all children and had the idea of creating a winter wonderland in our forest area.
"The whole school community came together. Parents donated decorations and organised a secret Santa present for every child in school and a local company, Arktek, provided resources such as a music system, lights and tarpaulin.
"One parent built a fire place and a previous staff member volunteered to help create the magic.
"Current staff set about making finishing touches. For example, clothes for the elves and woodland creatures to name a few.
“Our staff then created the wonderland and made the magic happen.”
The magic includes Mrs Claus’ skit chen, the elves’ bedroom, the elves’ workshop, a fairy village, a Nativity scene and Santa in his sleigh.
Along the way there are treats for the children to enjoy such as a gingerbread man and hot chocolate.
The school also opened the winter wonderland up for families of pupils to visit, with Mrs Pizl adding: “Adults that have exp erienced it already have been brought to tears by the sheer magic
“As a headteacher I am overwhelmed by the support of the school parental community, local businesses and the creativity of my support staff to provide such a magical experience at a time where a bit of magic is greatly needed.
"A huge thank you to Arktek and a special mention to support staff Bev Quinn for her creative inspiration and of course thank you to Santa for taking the time to visit our winter wonderland at his busy time of the year.”
