Church’s plea to bring light to community

A church in Houghton is asking people to put stars in their windows during December to bring ‘hope’ in a difficult time

Saint Michael and All Angels’ Church Houghton-leSpring want to encourage joy around Houghton this Christmas by asking people to put stars in their windows – similar to the NHS rainbows.

The church has sent out 800 packs through local schools and businesses with the aim of reminding people that even in difficult times ‘there is hope and light’.

Rev’d John D’Silva said: “Many people cannot do their normal Christmas activities.

"And we hope that our trail through the high street gives people a fun activity that helps them engage with the Christmas story.”

The church has organised a ‘trail of light and hope’ in the high street and more than 15 businesses have put stars up in their windows which include nativity characters.

Families are encouraged to find as many stars and nativity characters as possible.

Rev’d John D’Silva added: “It would be easy for Christmas to pass without muc h joy th i s year.

"The church hopes that by the end of December everywhere that you go in Houghton will remind you of the hope and light that Christmas can bring.”

A crib scene can be found at the end of the trial in the church grounds as well as a Christmas tree where people can place the names of their loved ones who are missed at Christmas.
