Supermarket festive favourites offer sweet-toothed sugar high
Many of us indulge in sweet treats during the festive period, from Christmas cake to yule logs and, of course, the beloved mince pie.
However, new research has found some mince pies may be a lot higher in sugar than others, with one supermarket mince pie found to contain more than threequarters of our recommended daily sugar consumption.
According to Money.co.uk UK residents on average consume 15 mince pies during December.
The study also found that Iceland’s Luxury All Butter Mince Pies contain the highest amount of sugar - 24.6 grams.
This is 82 per cent of our recommended daily sugar consumption of 30g.
Asda’s Extra Special Luxury Mince Pies takes the second spot for the highest amount of sugar, followed by
Tesco Finest Mince Pies.
Although Waitrose’s shortcrust mince pies were found to have the lowest amount of sugar per pie, containing 16g, this is still over half our daily recommended amount.
A quarter of supermarket own-brand mince pies were found to contain six teaspoons of sugar per portion, with more than half of supermarket branded mince pies listing five teaspoons of sugar in their ingredients, which is equal to 71 per cent of the recommended daily allowance.
