Extra help in the pipeline for virus-hit pubs

Hu n d re d s o f pub s ac ro s s County Durham which have been affected by coronaviru­s restrictio­ns may get extra support.

Pub s wh i c h p re d o m i - nantly serve alcohol rather than food, are eligible for a one-off Government grant of £1,000 to help make up for a loss of trade over what w o u l d h ave b e e n a t r a d i - tionally busy Christmas period but Durham County Council is also considerin­g an enhancemen­t to the Government scheme in order to support eligible pubs and clubs across the county.

T h e c ou n c i l i s c o ntac ting businesses that may be eligible for funding to highlight the support available and has so far identified over 400 pubs in the county with which it will be making contact.

B u s i n e s s e s h ave u nt i l January 31 to apply for help and will be asked to provide supporting evidence in line with Government guidance.

Cllr Carl Marshall, Cabinet member for economic regenerati­on, said: “So many businesses across the county are missing out on much needed income over the festive period so I am pleased that this grant is being made available.

"However, it does not go far enough. That is why we are seeking to enhance the scheme to provide support to all pubs and bars affected during this period and safeguard the jobs of thousands of people in the county.

“Our staff will be working quickly to process these grants from 4 January and I would encourage any publican who thinks they are eligible to apply.
