Top McDonald’s limited choices: katsu nuggets to toffee sundaes

-

As the McDonald’s Big Tasty relaunches and Katsu Curry Chicken Nuggets join the realms of other limited edition items, we take a look back at other ‘wish-youwere-here’ treats.

Cheese Bites have yet to be made a staple on the McDonald’s menu. Cheese melt dippers usually appear around Christmas and disappear in late January. Camembert cheese is coated in a four bread crumb mix and accompanied by a tangy tomato dip. You can currently buy four or 12 for takeaway only. Cheddar Dippers will be introduced to the menu on January 19.

Ice cream Sundaes were soft serve tubs of indulgence – wrapped in strawberry or toffee sauce that were a feisty competitor to the McFlurry. They were removed from the menu in June 2018. Now they find themselves cheating on

Ronald McDonald, with a hot fudge sundae from Burger King.

The one thing McDonald’s struggles to accomplish is the great British breakfast. It seemed it had come close when variations of the breakfast wrap snack wraps appeared on the cheaper savers menu, but by January 2018 they were discontinued. Its latest morning roll creation of the Breakfast Snap Wrap has a sausage pate, egg, bacon, cheese, and ketchup or brown sauce. Or you can still enjoy the Egg McMuffin.

The Arch Deluxe was launched in 1996 and consisted of two beef burgers, peppered bacon, lettuce, tomato, American cheese, onions, ketchup and a ‘secret’ mustard and mayonnaise sauce on a sesame bun. It is estimated McDonald’s spent over $300 million on research, production, and marketing for the Arch Deluxe, which was axed in 2000.

The Big Tasty was cut from the menu in January 2020. It is made up of fresh British and Irish Beef patties, melty Emmental cheese, tomato, lettuce, onions, and Big Tasty sauce on a sesame seed bun. You can also add bacon.

The ice-cream favours Crunchy and Dairymilk for McFlurrys were axed in 2019, leaving Oreo topping as the longest standing dessert choice. A new flavour or two is introduced in winter and summer – with Maltesers returning, along with favourites such as Flake or Galaxy Caramel.

Katsu Chicken Nuggets are a fast food hybrid being sold in McDonald’s now, that involves bites of British chicken breast coated in Panko breadcrumbs and served with the Maccie Dee’s curry dip.
