Happy ending as seal is rescued from the beach

-

A potential ordeal was prevented after vigilant members of the public spotted a seal pup at Seaburn beach and contacted the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).

The seal was hauled up at low tide away from the water at the base of the steps near the promenade. The area is popular with dog walkers and can get busy, which puts seals at danger.

Jason Woodhouse, who was part of the rescue team said: "This seal had fresh superficial fighting wounds, but was well hydrated and no other health concerns.

"Due to the number of dogs and members of the public, a decision was made to relocate north to a suitable spot for rest.

"Our medics used an upturned seal crate which was reinforced with rope to make carry hands, to be sure medics’ fingers were well away from teeth.

"Amazing teamwork as always and a big thankyou to Martin from Sunderland City Council for assistance, as well as a lovely local gentleman who offered the loan of a larger vari kennel."

Seals can spend a large amount of their time on land to get rest.

Injuries and sickness can also cause them to haul out onto the coast.

The BDMLR advises not to approach seals if you spot them and not to chase them back into the water.

Dogs shouldn’t be allowed near the animals either – despite looking cute, seals can defend themselves aggressively if necessary.

Contact BDMLR on 01825 765546 if you find a seal on the beach and are concerned about it.
