Met Opera stars will shine in new pay-for-view series

The Metropolit­an Opera’s Met Stars Live in Concert payper-view series continues into the new year. Three recitals are planned – Sondra Radvanovsk­y and Piotr Beczała on Saturday January 23, Anna Netrebko on Saturday February 6 and Sonya Yoncheva on Saturday February 27.

The final recital to be announced in the series will feature Angel Blue who starred in the Met’s New Year’s Eve Gala live-streamed from Augsburg, Germany together with Pretty Yende, Javier Camarena and Matthew Polenzani.

The Met Stars Live in Concert series, which first launched in July last year, stars some of opera’s most famous artists singing from locations across Europe and United States.

To date, in addition to the New Year’s Eve Gala, the series has featured Jonas Kaufmann from Polling, Bavaria; Renée Fleming from Washington DC; Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak from Èze, France; Lise Davidsen from Oslo, Norway; Joyce DiDonato from Bochum, Germany; Diana Damrau and Joseph Calleja from Caserta, Italy; and Bryn Terfel from Brecon Cathedral in Wales.

The Met Stars Live in Concert recitals, viewed to date by audiences of more than 150,000 worldwide, are shot with multiple cameras, linked by satellite to a control room in New York City where host soprano Christine Goerke is situated.

Gary Halvorson, the award-winning director of the Met’s Live in HD cinema transmissi­ons, directs.

The Met Opera’s free Nightly Opera Streams which began at the start of the lockdown will continue until Verdi’s Aida conducted by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Seguin opens the Met’s in September.

Sondra Dee Radvanovsk­y is an American-Canadian soprano.

Specializi­ng in 19th-century Italian opera, Radvanovsk­y has been called one of the leading Verdi sopranos of her generation.

Her signature roles include Elvira in Ernani, Leonora in Il trovatore,Elena in I vespri siciliani and the title role in Norma.

Piotr Beczała is a Polish operatic tenor.

Beczała’s La Scala debut came in January 2006 as the Duke in Rigoletto, the role in which he also made his Metropolit­an Opera, New York, debut on December 19, 2006.

In 2007 Beczała was awarded the Munich Opera Festival Prize.

Tickets, priced $20 (£15), are available on the Met’s metopera.org website. Performanc­es will be available for on-demand viewing for 14 days following the live event.
