‘Right-back? I only got replaced at Wigan when we signed Reece James’

Max Power saying he’s enjoying his switch to rightback – as he looks set to continue in the Sunderland backline.

The former Tranmere Rovers and Wigan Athletic man was moved to fullback earlier this year after injuries to Conor McLaughlin and Luke O’Nien restricted Lee Johnson’s options in that position.

And while O’Nien has returned to the matchday squad in recent weeks, Power looks set to retain his place in the back four, having put in some encouraging displays of late.

The switch in role caught many by surprise, as did the 27-year-old’s quick adaptation.

But while he has been known best as a midfielder during his time on Wearside, playing in different roles is nothing the Sunderland captain hasn’t had to contend with in the past.

Indeed, he has previously played as a full-back at both of his former clubs – which has made the transition at the Stadium of Light nearseamless.

Power’s versatility could prove key in what is set to be a hectic end to the season – with Sunderland having to squeeze in a host of fixtures before the end of the campaign.

And he insists he’s happy to play anywhere as he looks to help drive the Wearsiders up the table.

When quizzed on the change in position, Power said: "I think it's come as a surprise to some because since I've been at Sunderland I've not played there [right-back].

"I played there a lot growing up through the youth ranks at Tranmere and quite a few times in the first team there.

"Paul Cook liked me there, but unfortunately we signed England's next rightback [Reece James] at Wigan so that sort of put that one to bed. I've got no shame in that!

"But it's a role I enjoy and anyone who knows me and knows my personality knows I'll play anywhere for the team and I'll always do as well as I can, given any circumstance.

"It's something I'm enjoying and there's a lot of similarities to midfield. It's enjoyable, especially when we dominate the ball.

"I think my career numbers suggest I get on the pitch where I can and if I can help the team in any position then I will.”
