Coronaviru­s death toll increases by 13

A further 13 coronaviru­s hospital patients have sadly died while being cared for by South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

NHS England confirmed yesterday that a further 993 people, who tested positive for coronaviru­s (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 65,104.

Patients were aged between 23 and 102. All except 47 (aged 32 to 96) had known underlying health conditions.

Deaths are recorded as Covid-19 related where a person has died within 28 days of a positive test.

Across the UK on Thursday, it was announced that 37,892 more people have tested positive for coronaviru­s, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 3,543,646.

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust announced 13 deaths yesterday, bringing the total number of deaths at the trust to 753. In Sunderland, there were 173 new cases on Thursday. The total number of cases since March is 17,368, according to data from Public Health England.

The weekly case rate for seven days up to January 16 in Sunderland is 428.9 per 100,000 people.

The total number of cases recorded in seven days up to January 16 is 1,191.

Data for the most recent five days has been excluded as it is incomplete and may not reflect the true number of cases.

There are currently 234 in hospital, 15 of them on ventilatio­n.
