Shoplifter warned by court judge

A woman caught stealing more than £200 of booze and other goods was warned by a judge to not see her sentence as a let-off.

Shelly Newton, 38, has received a conditiona­l discharge after she was caught swiping £202ofitems­fromSainsb­ury’s supermarke­t, in Silksworth Lane,Sunderland,onTuesday, November 24, 2020.

Newton was told by District Judge Kathryn Meek at South Tyneside Magistrate­s’ Court not to see her sentence as a let-off and warned her it was time she stopped offending.

The court heard that Newton had had pressure put upon her to steal by another person.

Newton, of Westmorlan­d Street, Wallsend, who owes the court £1,300 from previous offending, pleaded guilty to shop theft .
