A Wearside firm’s 100 workers can look forward to a more secure New Year after it beat the opposition to a lucrative police contract.

HLA Services is starting 2021 with a strong order book – including a three-year maintenance contract with Northumbria Police.

The company, which is based in Boldon, is to supply air conditioning to 23 police stations in the force area.

2021 also marks the company’s 18th anniversary since being formed by directors Neil Henry and Paul Smith and, during that time, it has grown into one of the region's leading mechanical, air conditioning and climate systems specialists.

It employs over 100 staff, with satellite offices in Teesside, Cumbria and North Yorkshire.

Mr Henry, said: “We have started the year on a positive note and with strong levels of activity. Over the years we have weathered the financial crash, Brexit and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but have remained focused and resilient.

“In the last 12 months, we have seen growth in our mechanical service and maintenance divisions, and recruiting specialists in areas such as ventilation has enabled us to tender for more work.”

HLA Services clients include Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham Universities, Hays Travel, Caterpillar UK and Durham Cricket club.

The firm has seen a 30% increase in its mechanical contracts department and 10% growth in its service maintenance division and has a turnover of £12.5million.

Mr Smith, said: “Looking forward, sustainability is high on our agenda and we have pledged our commitment to reduce carbon emissions in line with the Government’s target of reaching net zero by 2050.

“During 2021 our fleet will start to become electric with charging points at our locations and will also, where requested, install electric charging points for clients.

“As we continue to grow, retaining and attracting more quality staff becomes imperative.

"We will take time and exercise due diligence when picking each new person and provide them with individual development plans, so they grow and develop with us.”
