Johnson Will let Grigg leave Cats - but only if he gets replacement

-

Lee Johnson says Shrewsbury Town is an acceptable destination for Will Grigg as far as he is concerned, but has told the striker that he will not go into the second half of the season with fewer than four strikers.

Shrewsbury are understood to be leading the race for Grigg, though there is interest from a number of clubs in the EFL.

The striker is yet to make an appearance in 2021 due to a knee problem but, significantly, made his return to training on Thursday.

Johnson has said he is more than happy for Grigg to stay at the club, but gave the strongest indication yet that the player himself sees his short-term future elsewhere.

"I’ve had detailed conversations with Will and I’m more than happy to have Will Grigg here competing at this football club as one of our four strikers," Johnson said.

"Obviously he’s got his own opinion on that and it’s certainly not negative towards Sunderland.

"But he wants to find that buzz and that spark and score goals again, and he may well think there is a better place to do it than here, given the competition he’s got.

"I won't let Will go out until we get one in, it's as simple as that.

"If Shrewsbury is the desired destination, then I

Will Grigg could leave Sunderland before the end of the month.

haven't got a problem with that at all because I know that they will look after him.

"Remember that this isn't Will gone for good, he is under contract for next season.

"So if it helps Shrewsbury,

us and it helps Will, then I've got no problem with that at all.

"At the same time, my priority is Sunderland and getting enough wins between now and the end of the season to be successful."

Shrewsbury will also have to come up with an offer that makes the deal financially worthwhile for the Black Cats.

While Sunderland will likely accept that his wages will not be covered in full, the contribution made will be important as the complex salary cap rules mean only a portion of that will be available to put towards a replacement. Johnson retains strong faith in Grigg.

But the player has struggled on Wearside, scoring just eight goals in 61 appearances.
