Martial arts sessions to the keep family fit

A martial arts club is offering free sessions to children and adults to keep them fit and engaged during lockdown.

Toukon Martial Arts usually runs sessions from Washington Village Hall. While this is not possible under current covid restrictions, the club is offering free sessions on Zoom or Facebook, open to non-members and free of charge.

Each Wednesday there is a free 30-minute HIIT (highintensity interval training) workout at 6.45pm, or Pilates at 7.30pm live on zoom.

During half-term, February 15-19, a 30-minute martial arts based fitness class will take place daily, Monday to Friday.

If popular this will continue as an after-school session two days a week while lockdown is in place.

These sessions will be streamed via Facebook Live.

Anyone wishing to participate will need to join the private Facebook group “Community Kickfit”.

Parents are welcome to join in, or have half-an-hour’s peace while the kids are occupied.

The sessions are run by martial arts instructor Kevin

Blewitt, who is looking forward to them and thinks they could prove important to help keep minds and bodies fit, especially when social interaction is so severely restricted.

He said: “Our reason for doing this is that we recognise that many people will be struggling to keep kids active and fit during lockdown, more so than during the summer.

“The feedback from parents of our members who have been able to benefit from online sessions has been that the kids have loved being part of a group and that our sessions have kept them focused and positive.

“We are opening it up to anyone.

"Obviously, it’s hard to get access to a gym at the moment and people might be feeling isolated.

“We’re opening a halfterm one for the kids and we’ll open a Facebook group for them to watch rather than Zoom.

"We can do it on Facebook live as not everybody wants to be seen.

“For the half-term one, the parents can join in too but it’s for children mainly because they’re going to be stuck indoors.

“If anyone has any questions they can message the Toukon Martial Arts Facebook page.”
