Businesses defy virus

More than 1,600 new businesses were establishe­d in Sunderland last year – despite the economic uncertaint­y caused by the coronanvir­us pandemic, according to new figures. The data, compiled by business software support firm Inform Direct from Companies House, shows 1,620 new firms were started in the city during 2020 – bringing the number of registered companies in area to 8,327.

They were among a record 7,867 new businesses establishe­d in Tyne and Wear during 2020, more than in any previous year – an increase of 10% on the 7,132 during 2019.
