Businesses defy virus
More than 1,600 new businesses were established in Sunderland last year – despite the economic uncertainty caused by the coronanvirus pandemic, according to new figures. The data, compiled by business software support firm Inform Direct from Companies House, shows 1,620 new firms were started in the city during 2020 – bringing the number of registered companies in area to 8,327.
They were among a record 7,867 new businesses established in Tyne and Wear during 2020, more than in any previous year – an increase of 10% on the 7,132 during 2019.
