Warnock: Fry has matured – I hope we keep him here

Neil Warnock says Middlesbrough’s Dael Fry has matured into a leader this season, and believes the centre-back is one of the best in the Championship.

The 23-year-old suffered a nasty cut below his eye during last week’s game against Blackburn Rovers, and was missed as Boro were beaten 3-0 by Rotherham United.

He returned for Saturday’s goalless draw against Championship leaders Norwich City, though he was withdrawn with minutes remaining.

He should be available when the Teessiders face Brentford at the Riverside on Saturday.

After a challenging 2019/20 campaign, when he had just recovered from a lengthy injury setback, Fry has been excellent for Boro this season, forming a strong partnership with Paddy McNair at the back.

“I feel he’s grown up,” said Warnock, when asked about Fry ahead of Saturday’s game.

“When I came, I feel he was a bit immature, if I’m honest. But I think he’s a man now.

“I think Paddy has helped him, and I think he’s a man now. He’s our leader, really.

"We go off him, so he has been a big loss, but I won’t rush him back unless he’s ready. We’ve got another

week to the next game, and he’ll definitely be alright for then.”

Fry has previously been linked with Premier League clubs, yet Warnock says he and Boro chairman Steve Gibson are keen to keep hold of the defender, as well as another academy graduate – Marcus Tavernier.

“I don’t think he’s disappointed anybody,” added Warnock, when discussing Fry’s ability.

"If you’re one of the top clubs, he’s got to be on your list. For me, he is, but I’m glad I haven’t had any phone calls.

“To be honest, though, I don’t think Steve would sell him anyway at the moment.

"I think Steve’s happy with what we have. He’s trying to let me have one or two players in.

“We haven’t got a lot of money, and we’re trying to be shrewd in what we do.

"But every time we talk about people like Dael and Tav, he wants to keep them all.

"While I’m here, that’s what I hope he does.”
