Mackems hit back at Lord Sugar's city jibe

-

Mackems have hit back after Lord Alan Sugar shared a post on Twitter mocking Sunderland.

From Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens to the Stadium of Light, and Roker Pier to Penshaw Monument – the city has lots of famous landmarks to be proud of.

So when the British billionaire tweeted a jibe about the city to his 5.2million followers, Mackems were quick to defend their home.

The post says ‘Due to Coronavirus, this year’s Love Island will be filmed in Sunderland’ and is accompanied with a picture of a topless man, smoking in a make-shift pool made out of a large tyre.

In sharing the post, The Apprentice star simply wrote ‘funny’ – but was quickly met by a backlash from Mackems determined to defend their hometown.

One Twitter user wrote: “Sunderland is one of the top 3 places in the UK to start a business. Why would you put it down during a time when so many business, new and old, are struggling?”

While others shared stunning pictures of Sunderland including of Wearmouth Bridge, the National Glass Centre and the scenic seafront and questioned if the Lord Sugar had ever been to the city.

Alongside a picture of beautiful Sunderland landmarks, another user wrote: “Maybe visit one time, Lord Sugar. It’s not so bad, I promise.”

Another said: “Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely sea front in Sunderland! Always thought of it as an industrial eyesore, but it has a great beach.”
