Line closure warning for Metro passengers

-

Metro system passengers in Sunderland are being warned of two weeks of disruption from next week.

From Monday, system operator Nexus is closing the line between Felling and Longbenton for 14 days and replacing train services with buses.

The closure on the system’s busiest stretch of line is to renew overhead power lines to prepare the system for the arrival of a £362m new train fleet which is due to enter service from 2023.

Nexus has brought forward the work while passenger numbers are lower during lockdown.

Metro trains will still be running locally between Heworth and South Hylton in Sunderland.

Major projects director at Nexus, Cathy Massarella, said: “This two-weekl ine closure will involve some of the most intensive maintenance and modernisation work on the network for five years.

“There is no good time to shut such a big chunk of the network, and this work can only be undertaken effectively during an extended closure period. The current lockdown means that we are able to do the work while passenger numbers are low.

“We will ensure there is a fast and reliable replacement bus service running when the Metro line is shut. We advise passengers to plan their journeys in advance before travelling of they need to make an essential journey.”

Nexus say replacement bus services will be provided during the closure.

All Metro tickets will be accepted on the buses, numbers 900/901/ X 900/ X 901.

Services are due to resume as normal on Monday, March 1.
