Take One Leave One Sunderland has launched with the aim of providing warm clothes and supplies to those who need them most across Wearside.

The charity, which has been set up at Independent on Holmeside in the city centre, is urging the public to leave items of warm clothing on a rail so those in need can come and take them for free.

Take One Leave One Sunderland is also accepting donations of food and supplies which will also be given out to the vulnerable.

This week marks the first week of the charity operating and organiser Iain Lane, who works in the event industry as an electrician, has explained to the Echo why he decided to set it up.

The 35-year-old from High Barnes said: “With covid impacting my job and being placed on furlough.

"I was basically looking for something to do.

"I wanted to spend time doing something that would fill the days and help people, but also raise

awareness about the issue of homelessness.

"People sleeping rough in the UK is something that has always bothered me.

"We’re one of the richest countries in the world yet there are still people living on the streets.

"So if one person takes a coat or a warm clothing from us, then it is a success as far as I’m concerned.”

Iain also revealed how members of the public can get involved and help to support the new Sunderland-based charity.

He added: “People can come along and just drop clothes off and we will sort them so those who need them most can have access to them.

"We’re looking for warm clothing in particular, so any unwanted coats, hats, scarfs, gloves etc. are most welcome.

"If anyone wants to drop off food or other supplies then we are happy to take donations.

"We’re on social media so people can just drop us a message.”
