Luxury safe maker plans city expansion

-

A Wearside business specialising in the design and manufacture of ‘luxury safes’ has lodged plans to expand its city base.

Sunderland City Council has received a planning application plans for units off Church Street East in the city’s East End.

Applicant Coulson Luxury Safes Ltd is looking for permission for a new factory building to help expand its operations.

The proposals include a building extension which would replace an existing yard area.

And according to planning documents, the move is expected to create two full-time jobs.

A design and access statement, submitted with the application, states the expansion would help meet “increasing business demands.”

The document reads:

“The extension to the premises will meet the applicant’s current and increasing business demands housing the purchase of a CNC mill and CNC turning machine as well as the relocation of an existing CNC mill.

“The proposal will eliminate the external storage of safes and parts of what is currently yard area.”

The firm’s website states that Coulson brand luxury safes are hand-built and made to order. According to planning documents, the building extension would mirror the “functional form of existing buildings.”

The proposed colour palette also aims to match the “industrial appearance of the nearby six storey River View apartments of High Street East.”

A decision on the plans is expected to be made by early April.
