City council launches an internal inquiry

-

City leaders have launched an internal probe into conduct at a key council department.

A number of workers are understood to have stepped away from duties while an investigation examines the workings of environmental services at Sunderland City Council

A spokesman for the Sunderland branch of Unite the Union, said it welcomed the investigation being carried out by Sunderland City Council.

The statement read: “It is essential that an independent investigation takes place to address the issues raised by current and former employees within the Environmental Services area of Sunderland City Council.”

Some workers are currently away from their roles while the probe is ongoing.

However, it has not been confirmed whether or not this is on a voluntary basis.

Among the responsibilities of the environmental services department are:

:: Waste collection and recycling

:: Removal and clean-up of fly-tipping and graffiti

:: Grass cutting and weed clearance

:: Winter maintenance, keeping roads, footpaths and pedestrian areas clear :: Street furniture

A city council spokesman said: “The City Council takes workforce issues very seriously and a small number of employees are currently away from work while an investigation takes place.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
