‘Chip chip hooray’ to another great idea

-

Another day, another tale of generosity from our community. Once again we report how, even in the toughest of times, people are finding it within themselves to look after those around them.

This time it’s Michelle Gray, manager of Seaham Chippy in the town’s Railway Street, who was so moved by the plight of a struggling woman she felt duty bound to step in.

After reading how the woman hadn’t eaten for days, she realised that the woman mustn’t be alone and so set up her own free meals service.

And, as she tells us today, she has been bowled over by the response from the public who have chipped in to help the cause.

Michelle said: “It breaks my heart that people can’t afford a hot meal.

"So I wanted to help those individual people that need a meal and also families that are struggling.

“The people of Seaham have been amazing. So many people wanted to help out.

"And if donations keep coming in then we are planning to arrange fresh food hampers for people to make easy meals. I can’t believe how much support we’ve had.”

It’s a fantastic scheme but the support doesn’t surprise us.

Throughout this pandemic the public have been quick to back those going that extra mile to help the most vulnerable and Seaham Chippy is just the latest in a long line of good news stories.

Long may they continue.
