Will cameras cut speed?

- Graham Hall Fulwell.

The proposed 20mph speed limit for Sea Road, aimed at protecting Fulwell Junior School, will be welcomed by the majority of residents, parents and shoppers.

However it will fail to address speeding and antisocial vehicle use.

Christchurch Road, leading onto Sea Road, is often treated as a racetrack and cars often hit this junction well in excess of 40mph, totally ignoring the current 30mph limit which is not enforced by the council or police.

The 20mph scheme should be extended to the bottom of Christchurch Road and up through the shopping area to Fulwell Road junction.

This will add further safety to shoppers, residents and the children going to and from school.

This will cost nothing extra or very little to complete.

Ending the 20mph at Chichester Road will do nothing to stop the speeding motorist who will still be speeding when they pass the school.

Illuminated speed warning signs (should they be fitted) remind many of their speed but are also used as a speed challenge by some drivers who often accompany their speed with illegally loud exhausts which are also ignored by the authorities.

Perhaps speed cameras are the answer, if you don’t speed you have nothing to worry about.
