20/20 vision

-

I suppose Ged Taylor could be proud to be continuing Labour's perfect vision in hindsight with his letter criticising Government actions on Covid. Echo February 19.

He has a pop at the Eat Out to Help Out scheme but should be aware: In January this year Labour's Shadow Health Secretary, Jon Ashworth, was savaged by Radio 4’s Justin Webb over

Labour's use of hindsight after he had recently criticised the Government's Eat Out to Help Out initiative.

After being pressed several times, Ashworth admitted Labour had not opposed the Eat Out to Help Out scheme at the time it was introduced.

Then the Christmas relaxation is targeted.

Well, as for the impact of the slight relaxation for one day at Christmas, research by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) suggests the trend in increases was already happening.

Prof John Edmonds from LSHTM said: "the research did not show an increase in contacts with more vulnerable groups. This suggests people may have decided not to spend Christmas with those at higher risk from the virus.

"That means the sharp increase seen between 20 and 30th December cannot be attributed to the holiday".

In the first few days of 2021 cases continued to rise at the same pace as before Christmas.

Prof Paul Hunter of the University of East Anglia medical school said: "I can't see any convincing evidence that Christmas actually did anything to make things worse at all.”

Perhaps Ged Taylor could use his 20/20 vision in hindsight to note that Labour called for students to be allowed to go home and spend Christmas with their families.
